Words
of Wisdom About Truth
He that perverts truth shall
soon be incapable of knowing the true from the false. If you persist in
wearing
glasses that distort, everything will be distorted to you.
Better in the abyss of truth
than on the summit of falsehood.
Error is multiform; truth is
one. A thousand lies will live together, and tolerate each other,
especially at
this time, when errorists are all crying out, “Cast in thy lot with us; let us
all have
one purse.”
The truth is as old as the
everlasting hills. Therefore, dear friends, be not touched with that
Athenian
madness of always seeking after some new thing. Did you ever hear of new gold?
To all
intents and purposes, all gold that is worth having is old.
I cannot agree with those who say that
they have “new truth” to teach. The two words seem to
me to contradict
each other; that which is new is not true. It is the old that is true, for
truth is as
old as God.

Spotting a Liar
Whenever someone makes me a promise, I think of Psalm 15. I
suspect that the promise is a tell-tale that they person is probably a liar, and
I'm usually right. Both Jesus and James tell us that we shouldn't back up our
word with an oath. This is because it reveals that our word isn't enough. When a
Christian says he will do something, it doesn't need anything else to back it
up. Psalm 15 says that a godly person will keep his word whatever the cost. The
entire Psalm describes the godly character. He lives in honesty, practices
righteousness, and it all begins in the heart. He doesn't gossip about or
despise anyone, but honors those that fear the Lord. Neither is he greedy of
gain. Those who do such things will never be moved...not even by death. They are
preserved by God because He has done a work in their heart, and living the Psalm
15 life is evidence of salvation. ~Ray Comfort

“So much that is spoken
in this world is untrue and empty talk. Be encouraged that God speaks in
promise.
His Word is pure and true. When you are surrounded by lies, rest on the promises
of the Bible.”

Truth or Error?
Steve often witnesses to his co- workers. But when he mentions
something directly from the Bible, someone frequently responds: “Wait! That was
written by men, and it’s full of errors just like any other book.”
The following letter to the editor in our local newspaper
expresses a similar thought: “Believers cite that the Word of God is infallible,
but I see no
apparent reason to believe that the words written in the Bible by
man are any more infallible than the words written in a science journal by man.”
How do we respond when the Scriptures are so readily dismissed
as being just man’s words with errors? Most of us aren’t biblical scholars and
may not
have an answer. But if we do some reading (2
Tim. 2:15), we’ll find the evidence that it’s God-inspired (3:16) and
therefore trustworthy.
For example, consider this: Over a period of 1,600 years, 40
different authors wrote the 66 books of the Bible. There were 400 silent years
between the
39 books of the Old Testament and the 27 of the New Testament. Yet,
Genesis to Revelation tell one unified story.
While we accept the Bible by faith, there’s plenty of evidence
that it’s true. Let’s be diligent to study and share what we learn with others.
~Les Lamborn

The Truth About Truth
In 1692, Harvard College adopted as its motto Veritas
Christo et Ecclesiae—“Truth for Christ and the Church.” Its crest
showed three books, one face down to symbolize the limitation of human
knowledge. But in recent decades that book has been turned face up to
represent the unlimited capacity of the human mind. And the motto has been
changed to Veritas- ”Truth.”The pursuit of
knowledge is praiseworthy, yet learning can quickly lead to pride and a
refusal to acknowledge any limits on our mental abilities. When that
happens, biblical truth is ignored or rejected.
What, then, is the truth about truth? A wise king wrote
centuries ago, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs
1:7). We must recognize the relationship between God and truth. Without
the help of the Holy Spirit and the instruction of God’s Word, man will be
ever “learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2
Timothy 3:7). When we acknowledge and obey His truth, however, we will
be set free from spiritual ignorance and error (John
8:32;
17:17).
That’s why we must be diligent in our study of the Bible (2
Timothy 2:15). It is the only book that tells us the truth about truth.

Reverse Thinking
I will live my life according to these beliefs
God does not exist
It's just foolish to think

It

Everything is fine
It is ridiculous to think
I am lost and in need of saving

The Truth About Atheists
Someone quoted the Prince of Preachers this morning. For those
who are not familiar with him, Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) had an intellect
that was equal to that of William Shakespeare. Both men had a vocabulary of
23,000 words (the average person has about 13,000 words). You may have to read
what he says a couple of times. I don’t say that in a condescending way, but
because of the language of the era in which they were penned:
"The atheist is, morally, as well as mentally, a fool, a fool in the heart as
well as in the head; a fool in morals as well as in philosophy. With the denial
of God as a starting point, we may well conclude that the fool’s progress is a
rapid, riotous, raving, ruinous one. He who begins at impiety is ready for
anything. 'No God,' being interpreted, means no law, no order, no restraint to
lust, no limit to passion."
"Those who talk so abominably as to deny their Maker will act abominably when it
serves their turn."
"Men of the world are apt to say, 'You are such a set of bigots; you think
everybody wrong but yourselves.' Is it wonderful [in the truest sense of the
word 'wonder'] that if we think we are right, we do not believe that those who
are opposed to us can be right also?"
"He who hates truth soon hates its advocate."
"He that perverts truth shall soon be incapable of knowing the true from the
false. If you persist in wearing glasses that distort, everything will be
distorted to you."
"He who thinks he never was a fool is a fool now. He who never owns that he is
wrong will never get right."
"Instead of being humbled in the presence of scientific infidels, we ought to
pity them; they affect to look down upon us, but we have far more cause to look
down upon them."
