First Coast Praying Itself To Economic Recovery?

Jacksonville, FL - May 9, 2012  A Jacksonville Day of Prayer, will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 9th at dusk (about 8:15pm) at Hemming Plaza (Laura and Duval Streets) near the fountain across from the main downtown library entrance.

When people encounter tough times, a little comfort certainly goes a long way. Many of us during times of difficulty turn to our often undernourished spiritual beliefs as a way to ground ourselves and to put our challenges in the proper perspective. Well, it just so happens that for many people here on the First Coast, tough times have certainly arrived in the form of a high unemployment rate, a real estate market that has faltered, and an economy that leaves a lot of small businesses struggling to make ends meet.

There is a local organization that has recognized the need for Jacksonville’s citizens to come together in light of the current economic challenges that we as a city are facing, and they have decided to do something about it. This church goes by the provocative name of Church on The Street of Jacksonville Florida, or COTS-Jax for short, and they are and have been on a mission of helping “just released ex-offenders” find their way to productive and meaningful lives.

May 9th, 2012 has been designated by COTS-Jax, as a collective day of prayer for the City of Jacksonville, its government, and its inhabitants, as we all attempt to navigate our way through these trying times. Officially, the day is known by the moniker of a “Day of Prayer for Jacksonville’s Budget and Economic Health.” The concept is really quite elegant in its simplicity. All of Jacksonville’s citizen are requested and encouraged to join in this effort by rising up as one unified voice in prayer for the benefit of the community in which we live.

The beauty of this idea is in its accessibility – every citizen of Jacksonville has the ability to take part in this event, for the benefit of our City, our communities, and our neighbors.

In its own words, COTS-Jax describes the Day of Prayer as follows: “Throughout this day of prayer we ask for God's favor, blessing, wisdom and guidance to rest upon our city government, businesses and our citizens that God would guide our city government leaders to resolve the city's budget deficit, renew the vitality of our city's economy and that God would aid and empower the citizens and businesses in our city and in our nation.”

Everyone is welcome to participate in this day long effort. Just stop where you are, say a prayer for our city, it’s leadership, budget, and economic health... then go on with your business. If you want, a few of us are meeting at the Hemming Plaza at dusk (about 8:15pm) near the fountain across from the downtown main library entrance. You are welcome to join us. After all, sometimes a little prayer can go a long way.
